NELSON MACHINE GUNNER

Mrs. Spence, 9, Castle-street, Nelson, has been unofficially informed of the death in action of her son, Pte. Peter Spence, of the Machine Gun Corps. The news is forwarded by Co.-Sergt.-Major Millward, who states that he was hit and killed by a piece of shrapnel on November 21st. “He was ready to lay down his all for freedom and right, and a braver soldier never lived,” the writer adds. Spence, who was 22 years of age, was formerly employed at Valley Mills.
