Private Fred S. Nelson, Skipton

Private Fred S. Nelson, South Staffordshire Regiment, son of the late Mr. Joseph Nelson, Rock Farm, Hetton, and of Mrs. Nelson, 20 Castle Street, Skipton, has been officially reported missing since April 11th, but a letter from a Chaplain shows that he was killed in action on that date, and their sad news is confirmed by a letter from a comrade, who says that Private Nelson was killed instantaneously by a machine gun bullet on the date named. Nineteen years of age and formerly in the employ of Messrs. Taylor and Hannam, drapers, Sheep Street, Skipton, Gunner Nelson enlisted about a year ago, and had been at the Front several months.

11 April 1919

NELSON – In loving memory of Fred S. Nelson, Private, South Staffords, who was posted as ‘missing’ on April 11th, 1918, now know to be killed on that date in ‘Messines Wood,’ the dearly loved son of the late Joseph Nelson, of Hetton, and of Mrs. Nelson, 20 Castle Street, Skipton, aged 19 years.

“To know him was to love him.”

‘Twas not for him to see the issue of the fight,
Nor for us to welcome his return;
He joined the great and glorious band of Britain’s fallen sons
Who gave their lives for Freedom, Truth and Right.

From Mother, Brothers and Sisters.
