James Burton Greenwood was the son of Miles and Margaret Greenwood, née Burton. Both parents were born at Dent, Yorkshire.

1911 Kendal, Westmorland Census: The Workhouse - James B. Greenwood, aged 17 years, born Sedbergh, Yorkshire, son of Miles Greenwood, Master of Workhouse. [Margaret was at their son Bryan's address: 58, Gillingate, Kendal.]

James enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was commissioned and joined the 19th (Service) Bn Lancashire Fusiliers (3rd Salford) (Pioneers) part of the 49th (West Riding) Division. When James was killed he was attached to the 1/4th (Hallamshire) Bn York & Lancaster Regiment.
James is commemorated on the Kendal War Memorial.
