ANOTHER SKIPTONIAN KILLED - Private Harold Bebee

Another name has to be added to Skipton's Roll of Honour, the unfortunate one on this occasion being Private Harold Bebee of the 2nd West Riding Regiment, son of Mr. Walter Bebee, of 8, Fairfax Street, Skipton. He was killed in action on April 18th, an official intimation of the sad occurrence having been received by his wife, who, with her three children, resides at Halifax.

Private Bebee joined the West Riding's in his teens and served at Halifax, Dublin, and in India. After leaving the Colours he became a postman at Skipton and later was transferred to Halifax. As a reservist he rejoined his regiment on the outbreak of War and was at the front in time to participate in the fighting which took place during the German advance on Paris.

He was wounded in the early stages and spent some time at home recuperating, but rejoined his regiment in the latter part of February. Since then he has been in several engagements and in a recent letter spoke of having had a narrow escape, his water bottle being shot from his side. Private Bebee was well known in Skipton and his death is much regretted by a large circle of friends.

BEBEE - September 14th, at the Skipton and District Hospital, Walter Bebee, of Fairfax Street, Skipton, aged 63 years.

EX SKIPTON POSTMAN KILLED

This week we have to record the death of another native of Skipton who has been killed during the weekend of Private Harold Beeby of the 2nd (Duke of Wellington's) West Riding Regiment, who until about two years ago was engaged as a postman in the Skipton postal service.

Private Beeby, whose home is at No. 8 Fairfax Street, Skipton, and whose father, Mr. Water Beeby, is employed at Messrs. Wright Bros., mineral water manufacturers, Raikes Road, joined the Army at the early age of fifteen, and shortly afterwards was sent to India. Two years later he was attacked by the deadly dysentery and invalided home. He then became stationed at the Halifax Barracks, where he found service as groom to one of the officers. On his discharge he returned to his native town and worked, as already stated, as a postman until he was transferred to Halifax Post Office. He was twenty-nine years of age, and married, and leaves a wife and three children with whom, as with his parents, much sympathy has been expressed.

On the outbreak of war, Private Beeby was called up and rejoined his old regiment, being immediately drafted to the Front. He was slightly injured in the earliest British engagement, the famous retreat from Mons, and recuperated in an Aberdeen hospital, paying a visit to his old home at Skipton during convalescence. Shortly after his return to the Front in February he wrote to his brother mentioning his narrow escape from death, his water bottle being shot away. Several communications from him had reached his wife, though little of late had been heard, and the news she received from the War Office on Friday came as a severe shock. The brother referred to above is in the National Reserve, and is at present in training at Bradfield, near Sheffield.
