SKIPTON GUNNER KILLED – GUNNER H.E. LEWTHWAITE, R.F.A.

News was received on Friday of the death in action of Gunner Harold Ervine Lewthwaite, R.F.A., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Lewthwaite, 69, Brougham Street, Skipton.

In a touching letter of sympathy to deceased’s wife, Captain J.W. Young says:– “I very much regret to have to inform you of the sad loss of your husband, Gunner H.E. Lewthwaite. He was in action with his Battery, and on the night of the 24th August he was killed by a German shell. I know this will be a great shock to you, and all the ranks in the battery send their deepest sympathy. His death was instantaneous, and he is being buried in a military cemetery not far behind the firing line. We all feel the loss of Gunner Lewthwaite very keenly. Although he had not been in this Battery very long, he had proved himself a very good comrade and a good soldier.”

Twenty-six years of age, deceased was in civil life an assistant to W.W. and K. Taylor, fruit merchants, Keighley Road, Skipton, and attended Skipton Parish Church. He enlisted at Easter 1916, and went to the Front the following August. After he had been in France three months he was invalided home suffering from trench feet and rheumatism, but returned to the fighting line at the latter end of May.
