KILLED IN A DUGOUT

BACUPIANS DEATH IN FRANCE

Another Bacupian has fallen victim to the Huns in the person of Private Harry Crane, aged 22 years, of the Duke of Wellington’s Own Regiment. Private Crane who was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. James Crane, Rainhall Road, Barnoldswick, and formerly of Brown Street, Blackthorn Gardens, Bacup, enlisted about five months ago, and was in Bacup recently on furlough. He was a smart young man, and was rapidly moving forward. From a note received from one of his comrades, it seems he was killed on Tuesday week in a dug-out by a German shell and he was buried in France the same day, along with a number of other young comrades belonging to Barnoldswick.

Private Crane left Bacup with his father to Barnoldswick about twelve years ago, and his father had been employed as a weaver in that town at Bradley’s Mill, the deceased soldier following the same occupation latterly. He has another brother at the front. In Bacup Private Crane was connected with Ebeneezer Sunday School. His mother died at Barnoldswick four or five years ago. Quite a number of relatives still reside in Bacup, including Mrs. Goddard, South Street, who is his aunt, and Mr. John Palmer, 3, Mary Street, his uncle.

Your son was in my platoon, and although I have not been with him long I can assure you that he proved himself a good soldier, being always ready and willing for anything. He was buried last night, and several of his comrades were present at the ceremony. His grave is marked by a neat little cross just behind the firing line. I am sorry to have lost him.
