Harry Roland Thelwell was the son of George and Ann Stapleton Thelwell, née Beeson. George was born at Settrington, Yorkshire and Ann at Whitham, Lincolnshire.

1901 Long Preston, Yorkshire Census: Prospect House - Harry R. Thelwell, aged 8 years, born Leeds, Yorkshire, son of George and Ann S. Thelwell.

1911 London Census: 97, Wimpole Street - Harry Roland Thelwell, aged 18 years, born Leeds, Yorkshire. [Harry was boarding with John James and Mary Susannah Coppock.]

THELWELL – July 8th (died from wounds) aged 23, Lieut. Harry Roland Thelwell, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment, formerly of Queen Victoria’s Rifles, only son of Mrs. Thelwell and the late George Thelwell, 34, Commercial Street, Leeds, and formerly of Long Preston.

FORMER LONG PRESTON OFFICER KILLED

Lieut. Harry Roland Thelwell, Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, has died in hospital in France on July 8th from wounds. When war broke out Lieut. Thelwell rejoined Queen Victoria’s Rifles, in which regiment he had already served for four years as a Territorial, and went to France as a private in October, 1914. He took part in the attack on Hill 60, following which he was in hospital in France and also in England, suffering from a damaged eardrum. Later he was given a commission in the Duke of Wellington’s, and about ten weeks ago was again sent to France, where he received his second star. He was the only son of Mrs. Thelwell, and the late Mr. George Thelwell, of Commercial Street, Leeds, and formerly for many years a resident at Long Preston. He was 23 years of age, and was educated at St. Cuthbert’s College, Worksop.

Lieut. Harry Roland Thelwell, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, died in hospital in France on July 8th from wounds. When war broke out Lieut. Thelwell rejoined Queen Victoria’s Rifles, in which regiment he had served four years as a Territorial. He went to France as a private in October 1914. He took part in the attack on Hill 60, following which he was in hospital suffering from a damaged eardrum. He was afterwards given a commission, and about 10 weeks ago was again sent to France, where he received his second star. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Thelwell, formerly of Prospect House, Long Preston, where Mr. Thelwell died a little over seven years since. Lieut. Thelwell was 23 years of age, and when in Long Preston he was well known as a boy vocalist.
