HISTORY OF THE EAST LANCASHIRE REGIMENT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 (Littlebury Bros. Ltd. 1936)

11th (Service) Bn. East Lancashire Regiment (Accrington)

1917

On the night of the 27th/28th June the brigade took up attack dispositions. The 11th Battalion objective was the north portion of Cadorna trench and Wood Alley to its junction with the Oppy-Gavrelle Road. On the 28th June there was heavy shelling of the trenches, and not long before Zero Hour (7.10pm) a British Heavy battery dropped shells in 'Z' Company's trench, causing several casualties.

This contretemps, however, had no demoralizing effect on the company. At 7.10 pm the first two waves advanced under a heavy and accurate barrage; the first objectives were captured in about eight minutes and final objectives soon afterwards. A large number of the enemy were bayoneted, a large number did not wait for the cold steel and were fired on by Lewis guns, and a few surrendered and were found in the trenches with their hands up . . . The Battalion casualties were 10 other ranks killed and 72 wounded. 2nd Lts. Wheeldon and Lonsdale were the only officer casualties.

[Henry Clapham was killed on the 28th June 1917]

CLAPHAM - Killed in action on the Western Front, Signaller Henry Clapham, East Lancs. Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clapham, Higher Parrock Farm, Barrowford, and formerly of Cross Gates Farm, Bank Newton, Gargrave, aged 22 years.

GARGRAVE MAN'S DOUBLE WAR LOSS

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Clapham, of Higher Parrock Farm, Barrowford, and formerly of Cross Gates Farm, Bank Newton, Gargrave, have been advised by the Preston Records Office that their son, Signaller Henry Clapham, of the East Lancashire Regiment, had been killed in action in France, aged 22 years. Deceased was, before enlisting, in the employ of Messrs. Holt, Vale Street Mills, Nelson, as a clothlooker, where he was held in high esteem by the workpeople. He was an organist at the Inghamite Chapel, Wheatley Lane, with which place of worship he had been connected all his life, and was always ready to assist in any good work. He will be a greatly missed man at this place of worship.

This is the second loss in the family, as another married son, Pte. John Markendale Clapham, of the same regiment, was killed in action on November 17th 1916. His wife, who lived at 50, Gordon Road, Nelson, received a letter from his comrade in France in which the writer said:-

"Dear Mrs. Clapham, - I am afraid by now you will have heard of the death of your husband who was instantaneously killed by a shell the last time we were in the trenches. I considered him and his friend Varley, who died the following day, two of the best men in the platoon, and their loss will be felt most keenly. Let me offer you my sincere sympathy in your great loss. At any rate, you have the consolation of knowing your husband died doing is duty. Yours truly, C.H. MALLINSON."

Pte. Clapham enlisted in May 1916, and had only been a short time in France. He was a chorister at Wheatley Lane Inghamite Chapel, and leaves a widow and one child. Another son is in the Royal Flying Corps, and now stationed in Kent.
