Herbert Park was the son of Robert and Jane Park, née Armitstead. Robert was born at Killington and Jane at Barrows Green, near Stainton, Westmorland.

Herbert lost his life when HT "Ivernia" was torpedoed and sunk on 1 January 1917, 93 kilometres from Cape Matapan, carrying reinforcements for Egypt. Herbert was a reinforcement to the 1/8th Bn Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), 52nd (Lowland) Division.

Herbert is commemorated in the Rolls of Honour at the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh.

News has been received that Lce.-Corpl. H. Park, of Sedbergh, was drowned. He was on the transport Ivernia.

SEDBERGH – DROWNED ON THE IVERNIA

PARK, Lance-Corpl. Herbert. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Park, of Sedbergh, have received word from the War Office that their son, Lance-Corpl. Herbert Park, of the Scottish Rifles, and formerly of the Highland Light Infantry, is missing, believed drowned. He was on the Ivernia en route for Egypt when that vessel was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. He was 24 years of age. The unfortunate soldier was well known in the Sedbergh district as a member of the bowling club, and also of the Sedbergh Wanderers’ Association Football Cub.

SEDBERGH – CONSERVATIVE CLUB

The annual meeting was held on Wednesday night, Mr. C.W. Gooch in the chair. – The financial statement showed that the past year started with a credit balance of £9 14s. 4d., and this had increased to £33 9s. 11d. In his report of the year’s working, Mr. G. Hall, the hon. secretary, referred to the loss of five members – Corpl. J.C. Leighton, Pte. J.C. Bateman, and Pte. H. Clemmet, killed in action; F,C. Bushby, died in hospital, and Pte. Herbert Park, drowned in the Mediterranean. He hoped the club would raise a permanent memorial to these men. He also read a letter from Mr. Walter Morrison, accompanying his annual subscription, and urging the members to keep the club going …

SEDBERGH – Lord Derby’s Scheme

The work at Sedbergh in connection with Lord Derby’s scheme of recruiting came to an end on Friday of last week. One hundred and thirty-eight men offered themselves for attestation; 39 of these were rejected as being physically unfit, 99 were accepted, of whom 65 were single, and 34 married. The number of men who have actually joined is 23, all single men. The names of those are C.G. Hall, Edwin Wadeson, Ernest Slater, J. Edgar Bateman, Arthur Edmondson, J. Victor Robinson, J.M. Dawson, Major Edward Reade, Henry Booth, Thos. Carradice, Rd. Greenwood, J.H. Ashburn, J.W. Hall, Michael Winn, Harry Bainbridge, George Bainbridge, Fred Parker, Herbert Park, T. Hunter Dover, Edward Storey, Thomas Dakres, Fred Fothergill.
