Lance-Corporal Herbert Smith, Skipton

Lance-Corporal Herbert Smith, West Riding Regiment, whose wife and little girl live at No. 7 Back Water Street, Skipton, died on May 1st from wounds received on April 21st in the fighting on the Western Front. Forty years of age, he was mobilised with the local Territorials at the outbreak of war and went to the Front in the following April. As a time-expired man he returned home in April 1916, but signed on again in the following August. He was invalided home with trench feet, but was able to return to the Front on April 8th last, a fortnight before he was fatally wounded. A native of Harrogate he served as a Volunteer in the Boer War, and prior to the present war was a labourer in the employ of Mr. T. T. Chapman, Skipton.

Lance-Cpl. H. Smith Dies of Wounds

Lance-Corpl. Herbert Smith, of the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment, husband of Mrs. Smith, of 17, Back Water Street, Skipton, died of wounds in France on May 1st. Lance-Corpl. Smith, who was 40 years of age, enlisted soon after the outbreak of war, and went out to France in April, 1915. In April, 1916, his time expired, but he joined up again the following August. He went out to France, and carne to England with trench feet. He returned to the front on April 8th last, and had been in France less than a month when he met his death. He was formerly employed as a labourer by Mr. T. T. Chapman, builder, of Skipton. He took part in the South African campaign.
