Herbert Thompson was the adopted son of Samuel and Alice Town, née Luty. Samuel was born at Linton Mill near Grassington and Alice at Smelthouses near Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.

Herbert was married to Minnie Burrows in 1904.

CARLETON – On Leave

Private H. Thompson, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment has arrived home on the usual 10 days’ leave from hospital at Backthorpe, where he was sent suffering from a bullet wound through the left lung received on the Western Front whilst stretcher bearing. He joined the Army soon after the outbreak of war, and has served 2½ years on the Western Front, during which time he has had 10 days’ leave before.

Private H. Thompson, Carleton

Mrs. Herbert Thompson, 10 Brook View, Carleton, has received word from the War Office that her husband, Private Herbert Thompson, was killed in action on the 25th of May. Before the war Private Thompson was employed as a weaver at Embsay. He was highly respected in the village and leaves a wife and one son, with whom great sympathy is felt. Private Thompson, who was in the West Riding Regt., took a very keen interest in all sports.

We are able to give a photograph of Private H. Thompson, West Riding Regiment, husband of Mrs. Thompson, 10 Brook View, Carleton, who, as recorded in our last issue, was killed in action on May 25th. Deceased was the adopted son of Mrs. Town, of Brougham Street, Skipton.

CRAVEN’S LOSSES IN THE WAR

Private John William Garnett, of the Scottish Rifles, and son of Mr. Amos Garnett, of Chapel Street, Carleton, is also reported to have been killed in action. Pte. Garnett, who was only 19 years of age, was residing in Nelson when war broke out, where he was employed as a labourer.

Pte. Herbert Thompson, of the 1st 6th Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment, in a letter to his wife, who resides at No. 6 Foxcroft Terrace, Carleton, states:– “No doubt you will have heard the sad news regarding John William Garnett. He was killed during a heavy bombardment on Tuesday afternoon July 25th, by the Germans, on our trenches. I was talking to him a day or two before, and he seemed as happy as a king."

Pte. W. Smith, another Carleton soldier, in a letter to his mother, states that he was sorry to inform her that Pte. Garnett had been killed in action.

Mrs. Herbert Thompson, of Brook View Carleton, has received word from the Record Office, York, that her husband Pte. Herbert Thompson, of the West Riding Regiment, was killed is action on May 25th. Pte. Thompson was 33 years of age, and before joining the colours he was a weaver at Embsay.
