James Horridge was the son of Joseph Henry and Eliza Horridge, née Smith. Joseph was born at Manchester, Lancashire and Eliza at either Illogan or Porthtowan, Cornwall.

1881 Brandwood, Spotland, Lancashire Census: 2, Brewery Fold - James Horridge, aged 1 year, born Rawtenstall, Lancashire, son of Joseph and Eliza Horridge.

1891 Haslingden, Lancashire Census: 5, Back Bank Terrace - James Horridge, aged 11 years, born Rawtenstall, Lancashire, son of Joseph Henry and Eliza Horridge.

1901 Todmorden, Yorkshire Census: 4, Back Garibaldi Street - James Horridge, aged 21 years, born Haslingden, Lancashire, son of Joseph and Eliza Horridge.

James, a weaver, joined the Army at Haslingden on the 13 July 1907.

British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards: Pte James Horridge, 8790 & 3/8790, 2nd West Riding Regiment. Theatre of War first served in: ( - ) [1 - France]. Date of entry therein: 20 September 1914.

In the 'Craven Herald' (5 September 1919), a brief mention is made of James Horridge in a list of floral tributes in an article headed 'Barnoldswick News': 'Private James Horridge, W.R.R.' The wreath may have been layed by John William Horridge who was living in Barnoldswick, Yorkshire in 1911 and was almost certainly James's uncle.
