James Maurice Wilkinson was the son of Frederick and Catherine Eliza Wilkinson, née Warren. Frederick, born at Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, was the son of Uriah and Jane Wilkinson. Catherine, born at Haughley, Suffolk, was the daughter of James and Sarah Warren. James Maurice was the cousin of L/Corporal Joseph Blezzard (S/13253) (q.v.).

WILKINSON – October 29th, at Rugeley Camp, Staffs., Private James Maurice Wilkinson, eldest son of Mrs. Frederick Wilkinson, 31, Wellhouse Road, Barnoldswick, aged 18 years.

BARNOLDSWICK SOLDIER’S DEATH IN TRAINING

The death occurred on Monday evening at Rugeley Camp, Staffs., of Private James Maurice Wilkinson, eldest son of Mrs. Frederick Wilkinson, a widow residing at 31, Wellhouse Road, Barnoldswick.

Deceased, who had been a member of the Barnoldswick Cadet Corps for four years, joined up in April last on attaining the age of 18. He was home on leave five weeks since, and shortly after returning to camp was attacked by blood poisoning. His mother visited him in the hospital a fortnight ago, and found him in a weak condition, though not apprehending a fatal result to his illness. Since then pneumonia set in to an acute attack, of which he succumbed. The body is being conveyed to Barnoldswick for interment at Gill Cemetery.

BARNOLDSWICK – THE LATE PRIVATE WILKINSON

As the result of a benefit performance by Mr. Jack Williams’ talented company at the Palace Theatre on Friday evening last, the sum of £16 1s. 3d. has been handed over to Mrs. Wilkinson, 31, Wellhouse Road, the widowed mother of Private Maurice Wilkinson, whose death from pneumonia (following septic poisoning) took place recently at Rugeley Camp, Staffordshire. Mr. Williams’ kindness and generosity in a deserving cause was suitably acknowledged by Mr. John Heald during the interval.

Days of sadness still come o’er us,
Hidden tears oft-times flow;
But memory keeps our loved one near us,
Although he died a year ago.
