SKIPTON SOLDIER’S DEATH IN EGYPT

Mrs. Shuttleworth, Hardcastle’s Yard, Skipton, received a long delayed letter on Saturday from Captain Arthur Handley, of the Army Service Corps, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, confirming the sad news of the death of her husband, Pte. James Shuttleworth, A.S.C., from dysentery in Egypt on December 7th last. The letter, which is dated December 8th, is as follows:– “Dear Mrs. Shuttleworth, – We cannot express to you how very sorry we all are at losing your husband. He was brought to us one afternoon looking rather unwell, and he was immediately sent to hospital. You can rest assured that every care and comfort was given him, but apparently he had dysentery very badly and the doctors were unable to save him. It must be a sad blow for you, but, perhaps it will give you a little comfort when I tell you that he was a good soldier, always did his duty, and never complained. He was a great favourite with us all, and we shall miss him very much. He died like a true Britisher, having faithfully done his duty to his King and Country. All our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you at this sad time.”

Thirty-nine years of age, Private Shuttleworth, who leaves a wife and two children, joined up about 8 months ago And had not been in Egypt long when struck down with the illness which terminated in his death. He was formerly employed at Belle Vue Mills, Skipton, and was one of the two soldier sons of Mr. John Shuttleworth, 66, Colne Road, Cowling. His brother, Pte. Herbert Shuttleworth. is in France. Mrs. Shuttleworth also received last week-end a letter from a R.A.M.C. orderly, who was with her husband, which had been written before the latter’s death.
