John Drane Knights was the son of Horace and Ellen Knights, née Chittleburgh. Horace was born at Bunwell and Ellen at Denton, Norfolk.

1891 Griston, Norfolk Census: Caston Road - John Knights, aged 6 years, born Griston, son of Horace and Ellen Knights.

1901 Griston, Norfolk Census: Watton Road - John Knights, aged 16 years, born Griston, son of Horace and Ellen Knights.

1911 Skipton, Yorkshire Census: Hirds Yard, Swadford Street - John D. Knights, aged 25 years, born Griston, Norfolk. [John was boarding with Arthur and Susan Garwood.]

John is commemorated on the War Memorial in Griston (SS. Peter & Paul) Church.

FORMER SKIPTON MAN FALLS IN ACTION

News has reached Skipton of the death of Pte. J. D. Knight of the Australian Infantry, who formerly lived with Mr. R. Garwood of 10, Belmont Street, Skipton, and was employed as a fireman by the Midland Railway Company. Thirty years of age, deceased, who was killed in action, emigrated three years ago to Australia where he worked on one of the railways up to about twelve months ago, when he enlisted in the Australian Infantry. Whilst in Skipton, deceased was a member of the Working Men’s Club, and when he left the town his fellow members and the Midland Railway staff presented him with a silver watch and chain. His parents are at present living at Nelson House, Griston, Thetford, Norfolk, where his father is doing ‘his bit’ on home service.

SKIPTON SOLDIERS KILLED IN ACTION

Information has been received in Skipton that Private J. D. Knight, of the Australian Infantry, and who formerly resided with Mr. A. Garwood of 10, Belmont Street, Skipton, has been killed in action. While in Skipton, the late soldier worked for the Midland Railway Company as a fireman. He emigrated to Australia three years ago, and worked on the railway there. He enlisted about ten months ago in the Australian Contingent. His father is at present on home service in this country. The deceased was formerly a member of the Skipton Working Men’s Club, and just before leaving for Australia he was presented with a silver watch and chain by the members of the club and the Midland Railway staff.
