John Edward Heyes was the son of Richard and Sarah Heyes, née Oddie. Richard was born at Clayton-le-Moors and Sarah at Burnley, Lancashire.
1881 Accrington, Lancashire Census: 30, Royds Street - John Ed Heys, aged 2 years, born Accrington, son of Richard and Sarah Heys.
1891 Accrington, Lancashire Census: 20, Royds Street - John E. Hayes, aged 12 years, born Accrington, son of Richard and [stepson of] Chaterina [sic] Heys. [Named as Catharine in the 1901 Census.]
John was married to Abigail Mary Riley in 1898.

The British Army Service Record for John Edward Heyes exists but may be incomplete. [Information in the record, supplied by his sister-in-law, Betsy Ann Clarkson, states that his wife had died in 1909 and that he had two children: Edward, born 1905 and Catherine, born 1907.]
John had served in the Army before the Great War with the 1st Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. He attested for the Army at Skipton on the 11 August 1915 and was posted to the 3/6th Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). He was posted to the 1/6th Bn on the 12 June 1916.
