CROSSHILLS – In Memory of the Brave

On Sunday morning a memorial service to the late Private John H. Stow, eldest son of Mr. William Stow, of Glusburn, was held in the Crosshills United Methodist Church. Private Stow had been in the Flying Corps, and had served two years in France as electrician at his depot, his death taking place in hospital on 7th December from an attack of pneumonia, following influenza. He was buried with other British soldiers in the graveyard at Coutrail, Belgium. The preacher was the Rev. F. H. J. Thornton, and he paid splendid tribute to Private Stow's Christian character. The choir, under the leadership of Mr. Wm. Harrison, sang the anthem 'The Homeland,' and Miss Florence Greenwood gave a solo. Mr. Ernest Clough resided at the organ.

Death of a Glusburn Air Mechanic

Much sympathy is felt throughout the district with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stow and family in the great loss they have sustained by the death of their elder son, Air Mechanic J.H. Stow, R.A.F., which took place on December 7th at the Casualty Clearing Station, Courtrai, Belgium, the cause of death being septic poisoning following an attack of influenza. Deceased joined the Air Force in December, 1916, and went out in March, 1917, prior to which he was employed as electrician at Messrs. Horace Green’s, Cononley. He was a young man highly respected by all who knew him and gave promise of a useful career. He was a useful worker at the Ebenezer Sunday school, where he was a teacher, following in the footsteps of his forbears, who have for long years been worthy members and active workers in the cause at Ebenezer. He was 22 years of age. His younger brother is with the forces.

CROSSHILLS

MEMORIAL SERVICE – At Ebenezer U.M. Church on Sunday morning a service was held in memory of the late John H. Stow, attached 7th Division Air Flight Department in France, who died from pneumonia following influenza on December 7th. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. William Stow, Glusburn, and great sympathy is expressed for them in their great sorrow. In the course of the sermon on “The hopefulness of Jesus regarding the future,” Rev. F.H.J. Thornton said:– We meet this morning in memory of one of our own lads, John H. Stow, with a sense of sorrow too deep for words. He was a brave boy and faithful spirit, greatly interested as worker in our Sunday School and church. Quiet, reserved, yet with a fund of humour that endeared him to us all. He has grown up with us at once the hope and joy of his parents and friends. He spent two strenuous years, entered into the joy of the armistice, only to fall a victim to this terrible epidemic. We had visions of a reliable worker and now our hopes are in ruins. What can bridge the gulf of almost hopeless despair but the hope that springs from contact with the Christ. He has not left us desolate. He is close beside us this morning saying “I will not leave you comfortless.” During the service a solo was rendered by Miss Florence Greenwood, and an anthem ‘The homeland,’ by the choir. Mr. W. Harrison conducted, and Mr. E. Clough was organist at a most impressive service.
