John Henry Hargreaves was the son of Henry and Fanny Hargreaves, née Tillotson. Henry was born at Skipton and Fanny at Sheffield, Yorkshire. (Both of Fanny's parents were born at Silsden, Yorkshire).

1901 Nelson, Lancashire Census: 49, Victoria Street - John Hy. Hargreaves, aged 10 years, born Silsden, Yorkshire, son of Henry and Fanny Hargreaves.

1911 Nelson, Lancashire Census: 18, Bentley Street - John Henry Hargreaves, aged 20 years, born Silsden, Yorkshire, son of Henry and Fanny Hargreaves.

John was married to Margaret Alice Counsell in 1915. (Margaret died on 12 October 1918).
