BARNOLDSWICK SOLDIER DIES FROM WOUNDS

On Sunday morning Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Shaw, of School Terrace, Barnoldswick, received the sad news that their son, Pte. John S. Shaw, had died from wounds in France on March 21st. Deceased, who was 22 years of age, joined the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry soon after the war broke out, and after undergoing training at various places, was drafted to France a week before Christmas. Prior to enlisting he was employed as a sheet metal worker at Leeds. He was of a bright and cheerful disposition and entered into his military duties with spirit. His letters home, both whilst in training and from the front, were always of a cheery character, with never a grumble no matter how rough the experience. In one of his letters just after enlistment he wrote: “I could not work any longer, as I thought it my duty to be at the front helping to defend our homes and country.” Prior to leaving Barnoldswick, Pte. Shaw was a bellringer at St. Mary-le-Gill, and a member of the Conservative Club.

TWO MORE BARNOLDSWICK SOLDIERS KILLED

Another Barnoldswick soldier has succumbed to wounds received in the firing line. This Eastertide Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Shaw of School Terrace, Barnoldswick, received the sad news of the death of their son, Private John S. Shaw, which took place in hospital behind the trenches on March 21st.

He was formerly employed as a tinsmith, following his father’s occupation, in Leeds. Upon the outbreak of the war he joined the King’s Own Light Infantry stationed at Leeds, and after an eventful period of training was sent to the Front with his regiment a few weeks before Christmas. Pte. Shaw took his soldiering seriously, and was popular with his comrades. It is not known in what manner the young soldier received his wounds, nor how long he suffered before being released by death. Whilst in Barnoldswick, Pte. Shaw attended the Parish Church and was a bell ringer at St. Mary’s-le-Gill Church.
