LANGCLIFFE MAN KILLED IN ACTION

The news has arrived at Langcliffe of the death in action of Pte. John West, and much sympathy is felt for his family. He was 23 years old. In civilian life he worked at the Langcliffe Paper Mill and was a very popular young man in the district. He was an enthusiastic player with Langcliffe Football Club and was also a member of the Settle Brass Band. He joined the 6th Duke of Wellington’s at the outbreak of war with his brother, Amos West, and the latter is at present in Flanders.

22 December 1916

WEST – In loving memory of Pte. J. West, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, who was killed in action ‘somewhere in France’, December 16th 1915.

He did not stop to reason when first this war began,
But went and did his duty as a soldier and a man;
And when the last reveille sounds, and when the battle’s won,
His Maker, whom he’s gone to meet, will smile and say “Well Done”.

From his Father, Brothers and Sisters. G. West, Langcliffe, Settle.

Little he thought his time so short
In this world to remain;
When from his home he went away,
He thought to return again.
He’s lying now in a distant land,
I know not how or where;
But oh, I hope God took his soul
Into His loving care.

From Annie Morphet 39, Robert St., Nelson.

21 December 1917

WEST – In ever loving memory of Private John West, 1/6th Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, who was killed in action, December 16th 1915.

He nobly answered duty’s call,
He gave his life for one and all.

From his Father, Brother and Sisters, and Annie.

20 December 1918

WEST – In loving memory of Private John West, 1/6th Duke of Wellington’s Regt., who was killed in action on the 16th December, 1915.

We think of him in silence,
His name we oft recall;
But there’s nothing left to answer,
But his photo on the wall.

From Father, Brothers, Sisters, and Annie.

16 December 1921

WEST – In ever loving memory of Pte. John West, 6th D. of W., killed in action, Dec. 16th, 1915.

Ever remembered by Father, Brothers, Sisters and Annie.
