AUSTWICK – DIED IN A GERMAN HOSPITAL

Mrs. Whinray, of Bank House, Lawkland, has received official notice that her eldest son, Private J. W. Towler, 4th East Lancashire Regiment, died from meningitis in a hospital at Friemensheim [sic], Lower Rhine, Germany, on June 14th 1918. Private Towler, who was 31 years of age, was called up on March 8th 1915, and joined the 2/6th Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. After being in training on Salisbury Plain, and at Hull, he went to France in October 1917, where he was transferred to the [East] Lancashire Regiment. He was taken prisoner in the retreat of last March, whilst acting as Lewis gunner. Prior to being called up he was employed as farm labourer by Mr. J. Robinson. Much sympathy is extended to Mrs. Whinray in her sad loss. Private Towler is the sixteenth Austwick lad who has died for his country.
