Joseph Clayton was the son of William and Jane Clayton, née Taylor. William was born at Great Harwood and Jane at Billington, Lancashire.

Joseph, a weaver, was living at Barnoldswick, Yorkshire when he joined the Army in August 1915. He served in France with the 10th (Service) Bn Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). He was wounded 5 July 1916, near Contalmaison, during the Battles of the Somme, 1916, 1 July-18 November, at the Battle of Albert, 1916, 1-13 July. When Joseph died of valvular disease of the heart at Nuns Lane School Hospital, Gateshead, Co Durham, he was attached to ‘G’ Coy 83rd Training Reserve Battalion.
