Joseph Gardner was the son of Robert and Grace Gardner, née Rainford. Robert was born at Goosnargh and Grace at Lytham, Lancashire. Joseph's brother, Private William Gardner, was killed in action on the 21 July 1917 whilst serving with the 16th (Service) Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Both brothers are commemorated on Warton War Memorial.
