Additional Information:

Joseph Gardner was the son of Robert and Grace Gardner, née Rainford. Robert was born at Goosnargh and Grace at Lytham, Lancashire. Joseph's brother, Private William Gardner, was killed in action on the 21 July 1917 whilst serving with the 16th (Service) Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Both brothers are commemorated on Warton War Memorial.

1911 Settle, Yorkshire Census: Foredale Farm - Joseph Gardiner, aged 18 years, born Carnforth, Lancashire. [Joseph was employed by William Redmayne, Farmer.]

Warton Soldier Killed
Official information has been received that Pte. Wm. Gardner, Royal Fusiliers, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gardner, of Warton, and formerly of Yealand, was killed in action in France on July 21st. Pte. Gardner, who is 27 years of age, was formerly in farm service and has only been about two months in France, where also his elder brother is serving. A younger brother was killed in October last at Salonica.
