HAWES – REPORTED DEATH OF TWO BISHOPDALE SOLDIERS: A Lamentable Coincidence

Pte. Matthew Heseltine, Yorkshire Regiment, fourth son of the late Thomas Heseltine, Newbiggin, near Aysgarth, has been reported killed in action on September 16th. He enlisted in February 1915 before he was 20 years of age and served in the Dardanelles before being transferred to France.

A remarkable coincidence has occurred in the reported death in action of another Pte. Matthew Heseltine, Yorkshire Regiment, fourth son of the late Matthew Heseltine, Thoralby, and cousin to the named soldier.

Both enlisted on the same day, were in the same regiment, kept together nearly all the time and were killed together. Singularly both belonged to a family of 10, four of whom were boys and six girls.

13 October 1916

HESELTINE – Killed in action in France, September 14th 1916, Pte. Matthew Heseltine, Yorkshire Regiment, aged 22, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Heseltine, Swina Cote Farm, Thoralby.

14 September 1917

HESELTINE – In ever loving memory of Private Matthew Heseltine, A.P.W.O Yorkshire Regiment, youngest son of the late Matthew Heseltine, of Swina Cote, Thoralby, killed in action on September 14th 1916.

“Memory keeps our dear one near us.”
