Nicholas Richard Stephens (born 3 November 1894) was the son of Richard and Mary Jane Stephens, née Jarman. Richard was born at Truro, Cornwall and Mary at Knaresborough, Yorkshire.

1901 Silsden, Yorkshire Census: Kirkgate - Nicolas Stevens, aged 6 years, born Rothwell, Yorkshire, son of Mary J. Stephens (married).

SILSDEN – A VICTIM OF THE HUNS

Official news has been received by Miss Maud Stephens of 38 St. John Street, that her brother, Private N. R. Stephens, West [East] Riding Yeomanry, was one of victims of the torpedoed steamer ‘Leinster’ on 10th October, while on its way from Dublin to Holyhead. Private Stephens was on his way home on leave, having been telegraphed for on account of his cousin being on leave from France. He was 24 years of age and had been in the Army about 12 months. The body has been recovered from the sea, and the funeral took place on Monday in Dublin.

Sinking of the Leinster: Silsden Soldier Drowned

Among the victims who were drowned in the torpedoing or the mail steamer Leinster on Oct. 10th, while on its way from Dublin to Holyhead, appears the name of Pte. N.R. Stephens, of the East Riding Yeomanry, brother of Mrs. Maud Stephens, of 38, St. John’s Street, Silsden. Pte. Stephens, who was 24 years of age, enlisted about a year ago, and had been stationed in Ireland. It is believed that Pte. Stephens was on his way home on leave, a telegram having been despatched to him stating that his cousin had arrived home on leave from France. Official news of his death was received from the War Office on Monday, and a later telegram stated that his body had been recovered and that he was buried at Dublin on Monday.
