‘Warwick Advertiser’ (19 May 1917)

Source: Warwick War Memorial Project: warwickwarmemorial.org.uk

Gunner P. Fitzgerald, Warwick R.H.A., a son of Warder James Fitzgerald, of Warwick, has been killed in action. Second-Lieutenant Gascoyn, his section commander, writing home, says:–“At the time it [his death] happened, he was gallantly doing his duty under heavy shell fire, and a 42 shell caught him and another man. If it is any consolation to you, you can be absolutely certain that his death was immediate and quite without pain. As his section commander, I am asked by the Major to say how much we all, officers, N.C.O.’s and men, feel the loss of your son. I think that with all hands, he was easily the most popular man in the battery. May I hope that you will be consoled in your great sorrow by the thought that when your son died he was gallantly doing his duty for King and country.”–Gunner Fitzgerald was 21.
