Percy Miller (born 9 February 1896) was the son of George and Lehana Miller née Higson. George was born at Ingleton and Lehana at Carleton-in-Craven, Yorkshire.

CARLETON-IN-CRAVEN

Called Up – Two young men, Messrs. Fred Metcalfe and Percy Miller, joined the colours on Monday under Lord Derby’s Scheme. They journeyed to South Shields early on Tuesday morning, where they are to be trained.

MILLER – Killed in action, September 18th, Pte. Percy Miller, of the West Riding Regiment, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Miller, of Carleton, aged 20 years.

EIGHTH CARLETON MAN TO FALL

The sad news of the death of their son, Pte. Percy Miller, of the 7th West Riding Regiment, was received by Mr. and Mrs. Miller, of Carleton near Skipton, on Thursday the 2nd inst. Pte. Miller had been missing since September 18th, and in reply to inquiries made the following letter has been received:–

27th October 1916.

“Dear Madam, – In reply to your letter of the 23rd inst., received this day, it is with regret that I have to report to you that Pte. P. Miller, No. 5575, of the West Riding Regiment, was killed serving his King and Country during action on September 18th by a bullet entering his head and knocking him out instantly. He always did his duty well and in a cheery spirit. I must say he is very much missed by both officers and other ranks in his Company. We all feel for you in your sad bereavement. T. P. STARKEY, 2nd Lieut., O.C. 13th Platoon D Company, West Riding Regiment.”

Deceased, who was only 20 years of age, enlisted in January last and went out to France in May. He was formerly employed by J. Wilkinson Ltd., Broughton Road, Skipton. He was well liked and respected by all who knew him.

A CARLETON SOLDIER’S DEATH

The following letter has been received by the parents of Pte. Percy Miller, of the West Riding Regiment, who has been killed in action in the big push in France:– “Dear Madam, – In reply to your letter of the 23rd inst., received to-day, it is with much regret that I have to report to you that Pte. P. Miller, No. 5575, of the West Riding Regiment, was killed serving his King and Country during action on September 18th by a bullet entering his head, knocking him out instantly. Starkey, 2nd Lieut.”

Pte. Miller was the son of Mr. Geo. Miller, residing at Church Street, Carleton, and was 19 years of age. He was called to the Colours on the last day in January of this year. He had but a short training, being in France a few months after joining the Colours. He was a weaver at Broughton Road Shed, Skipton. He has another brother who is serving in the army.
