1901 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: 36, St James Square - Peter Swales, aged 10 years, born Preston, Lancashire, son of Sarah A. Swales (married). [Richard Swales (single), aged 46 years, born Preston, Lancashire is described as a boarder living at the above address.]

Peter Swales was killed on the 1st July in attacks on German positions north of Beaumont Hamel. On July 1st, the Battalion lost 7 officers killed and 165 other ranks killed.

MORE BARNOLDSWICK MEN PAY THE PRICE

Mrs. Swales, 22, East Hill Street, Barnoldswick, received official intimation on Sunday of the death of her eldest son, Pte. Peter Swales, 1st East Lancashire Regiment (Machine Gun Corps), which took place on the 1st inst. somewhere in France. He was 25 years of age, unmarried, and was formerly a weaver at Messrs. Brown and Bailey’s, Long Ing Shed. He enlisted during the first mobilisation, and though he never had a furlough since going out to France 15 months ago, his letters home were always cheery and confident. Mrs. Swales has another son in the Durham Light Infantry, now at Stafford.
