‘Clitheroe Advertiser’ (4 January 1918)

DUNSOP SOLDIER KILLED

Mrs. Petty of Bishop’s House, Dunsop Bridge, was officially notified, yesterday, that her son, Richard, was killed in action on November 20th. It was only quite recently that she received word to the effect that her son had been wounded and was in hospital, and she was anxiously awaiting further tidings. The official notice of death, therefore, came as a great shock. Private Petty, who was well-known in the Vale of Hodder, was formerly employed by the Blackburn Waterworks, and his widowed mother and family have the very sincere sympathy of their friends.

DUNSOP’S ROLL OF HONOUR

PRIVATE RICHARD PETTY of the 2/8 West Yorkshire Regt., son of Mrs. Petty, Bishop’s House, Dunsop Bridge, who, as reported in our last issue, was killed in action on the 20th November. Unmarried, he was in his 27th year, and, prior to enlisting, about the end of May, last year, he had been for four years in the service of the Blackburn Waterworks. He was connected with Slaidburn Parish Church, and his death is keenly regretted by all who knew him. Sympathy throughout the Whitewell Valley is given to the widowed mother in her great trouble.
