Richard William Beard was the son of Sampson and Annie Maria Beard, née Houlding. Sampson was born at Ferryhill, Co. Durham and Annie at Leeds, Yorkshire. The British Army Service Record for Sampson exists but may be incomplete. He is listed in the Nominal Roll of the 1/6th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment): Pte S. Beard.

BEARD - January 22nd, 1918, in No 7 General Hospital, France, Private Richard Wm. Beard, of the Royal Flying Corps, son of Private Sampson Beard, formerly of 1, Carr's Yard, Newmarket Street, Skipton, aged 19 years.

SKIPTON SOLDIER'S DEATH IN HOSPITAL - PRIVATE RICHARD WM. BEARD

News was received from the Records Office, York, on Friday, of the death on January 22nd in No. 7 General Hospital, France, of Private Richard William Beard, son of Private Sampson Beard, who for several years had lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Brayshaw, 1, Carr's Yard, Newmarket Street, Skipton. Nineteen years of age, deceased joined the West Yorkshire Regiment in June last and was sent to the Front about two months ago. He had since been transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, but owing to illness had not been able to take up his new duties. Previously he had worked at Belle Vue Mills, and in the dye house at Park Shed, Skipton, and had been associated with the Bull Dog Scouts and the local Cadet Corps. Private Sampson Beard, who is now on home service in Staffordshire, has served nine months in France, and another son, Private George Clark Beard, West Yorkshire Regiment, is also at the Front.

DEATH OF PRIVATE RICHARD W. BEARD

Official information was received from the Infantry Records Office, York. that Pte. Richard William Beard, of the Royal Flying Corps, son of Pte. Sampson Beard, Skipton, now serving ----- Staffordshire, and grandson of Mrs. Brayshaw, of 1, Carr's Yard, Newmarket Street, Skipton, had died in the 7th General Hospital, France, on January 22nd. Pte. Beard, who was 19 years of age, enlisted in June, 1917, in the West Yorkshire Regiment, but was later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He had only been out in France about two months. Deceased prior to enlisting was employed as a dyer at Messrs. J. Wilkinson's, Park Shed, Skipton, and previously at Belle Vue Mills. He was a member of the Skipton Bull Dogs Troop of Boy Scouts, and also a member of the local Cadet Corps. Another brother, Pte. George Clark Beard, is at present serving in France with the West Yorkshire Regiment.
