SHARPLES – Death officially presumed of Pte. Robert Sharples, Yorks. Regiment, eldest son of Mrs. Sharples, Hardraw, near Hawes, reported missing in France, April 23rd, 1917.

HARDRAW SOLDIER PRESUMED KILLED

The death has been officially presumed of Private Robert Sharples, Yorkshire Regiment, eldest son of Mrs. Sharples, of Hardraw, near Hawes. Private Sharples enlisted in March 1916, and was sent to France in December of the same year. He was reported missing on April 23rd 1917, and as no further news has been received regarding him, his death on or about that date has been presumed. Private Sharples was a well-known local athlete, and was on many occasions a successful competitor at local sports. He leaves a widowed mother to mourn his loss.
