Sam Bradley was the son of William and Hannah Bradley, née Thompson. William was born at Cowling and Hannah at Aysgarth, Yorkshire.

1901 Cowling, Yorkshire Census: Woodside - Sam Bradley, aged 2 years, born Cowling, son of William and Hannah Bradley.

1911 Cowling, Yorkshire Census: 8, West View - Sam Bradley, aged 12 years, born Cowling, son of William and Hannah Bradley.

The British Army Service Record for Sam Bradley exists but may be incomplete. The record states that Sam served in France with the 23rd (Service) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (4th Tyneside Scottish) from late March 1918. When this battalion was reduced to cadre on the 17 May 1918 he was transferred to the 15th Bn Durham Light Infantry.

Private Sam Bradley, Cowling

Mr. and Mrs. William Bradley, West View, Cowling, have received official notification that their only son, Private Sam Bradley, of the Durham Light Infantry, has died from wounds at the 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France. He was previously reported "dangerously ill from the effect of wounds." Private Bradley
joined the Forces when 18 years of age in February, 1917, going out to France in March last. Previous to joining up he was employed by Messrs. John Binns and Sons Ltd., Croft Mills, Cowling, as weft-room assistant.

A Memorial Service, conducted by the Vicar, was held on Sunday to the memory of Private Sam Bradley, who recently died from wounds in France.

Cowling Soldier's Death From Wounds

Official information has been received of the death from severe wounds of Pte. Sam Bradley, Durham Light Infantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bradley, West View, Cowling. According to the report, Pte. Bradley was dangerously wounded during the recent fighting and was removed to the 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen, where his death took place on Saturday last. He enlisted in February, 1917, and went with his regiment to France in March, 1918. Before joining the forces he was employed as weft room assistant at the mills of Messrs. John Binns and Sons, Ltd.

COWLING

MEMORIAL SERVICE - Sunday morning, at Holy Trinity Church, a memorial service was held on behalf of Pte. Sam Bradley, who died of wounds on Aug. 21st. The Vicar, Rev. G.H. Naylor, officiated. Pte. Bradley, before joining the forces, was a prominent member of the Church and Sunday School.
