Thomas Gilbert Pitchford was the son of Edwin and Ann Pitchford, née Deakin. Both parents were born at Dawley, Shropshire.

1901 Mannerley Lane [Township of Ketley] near Wellington, Shropshire Census: Thomas Pitchford, aged 3 years, born Dawley, Shropshire, son of Edwin and Ann Pitchford. [Edwin, Ann and their childen were living with Ann's mother, Maria Deakin.]

1911 Oakengates, Shropshire Census: Perseverance Terrace, East Road, Ketley Bank - Thomas G. Pitchford, aged 13 years, born Dawley, Shropshire, son of Edwin Pitchford, widower.

Before joining the Army, Thomas lived at Newhouse, Brogden near Barnoldswick, with his uncle and aunt, Robinson Starkey and Rachel Baxter, née Deakin. In 1911 Robinson and Rachel were living at 30, Essex Street, Barnoldswick.

Private T. G. Pitchford, Barnoldswick

Private Thos. Gilbert Pitchford, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, reported killed in action on March 28th, was 20 years of age, and a native of Wellington, Salop, but since the death of his mother, had been brought up by his aunt, Mrs. R. Baxter, Newhouse, Brogden. He went out to France last September, and was wounded on November 24th. Prior to his joining up he worked for Messrs. Alderton, Fernbank Shed. His two brothers, who also lived in Barnoldswick, are in the Army: one in France, and the other in hospital in England, having been twice wounded.

Private T.G. Pitchford Killed

Pte. Thos. Gilbert Pitchford, Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, reported killed in action on March 28th, was 20 years of age, and a native of Wellington, Salop, but since the death of his mother had been brought up by his aunt, Mrs. R. Baxter. Newhouse, Brogden. He went out to France last September, and was wounded at Bourlon Wood on Nov. 24th. Prior to joining up he worked for Messrs. Alderton, Fernbank Shed. His two brothers, who also lived in Barnoldswick, are in the army, one in France and the other in hospital in England, having been twice wounded.
