HELLIFIELD – Wedding

A pretty wedding took place at the Settle Wesleyan Chapel on Saturday, the contracting parties being Mr. John Pearcy , elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearcy, of Brough, near Hull, and Miss Janie Parker, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Parker, of Hellifield. The bride, who is well known in the district, has acted as organist at the Hellifield Wesleyan Chapel. She was given away by her brother, Mr. Walker Parker, whilst Miss J. Mason acted as bridesmaid. Rev. W. Rapson was the officiating minister. The happy couple were the recipients of numerous and handsome presents.

Private W. Parker, Hellifield

Mrs. W. Parker, Haw Grove, Hellifield, received information on May 5th that her husband, Private Walker Parker, of the West Yorkshire Regiment, had been admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, suffering from a slight wound in the right buttock. On May 6th a telegram from the Record Office, York stated that he was dangerously ill and could be visited. Mrs. Parker undertook the journey to Boulogne, and arrived there 24 hours before her husband’s death, which occurred on the 9th inst., the official notice stating that his death was the result of wounds received in action, and bronchial pneumonia. Private Parker recognised his wife and made enquiries about his two children. Mrs. Parker spoke well of the kindness shown to her by officials and nurses during her visit. She remained at Boulogne until after the funeral, which took place at Eastern Boulogne Cemetery on Sunday morning. Private Parker was 30 years of age. He enlisted in June 1917, and went to France in October. He was formerly employed by the Midland Railway Company as a porter.

HELLIFIELD – Memorial Service

On Sunday evening, at St. Aidan’s Church, a memorial service was held coupled with names of Corporal Percy Barton, Pioneer Angus Ross, Privates Matthew Lund, Walker Parker and Albert Hailwood. The Vicar (Rev. A. Whyte), in an impressive sermon, made touching references to the lives of the fallen heroes Special hymns were sung, and the organist (Miss D. Wilson) played the Dead March at the close of the service.

His cheery ways, his smiling face,
Are pleasant to recall;

And died beloved by all.
