AN OLD POSTAL SERVANT GONE
SAPPER WALTER B. PARKER YIELDS HIS LIFE
It is only five weeks yesterday since Sapper Walter B. Parker, of the Royal Engineers, returned from leave to France, consequently the news of his death in action, which was received by his mother, Mrs. Parker, York St., on Tuesday, came as a very severe shock. In his 32nd year, Sapper Parker was a telegraphist and was attached to various companies as required. According to his officer, who forwarded the ill-tidings to his grief stricken mother, Sapper Parker was killed instantaneously on the 14th. inst. When war broke out, he joined the 2/ “Cuffs and Collars” but the Post Office authorities declined their sanction, urging that, if desirous to enlist in the Forces, it was his duty to enlist for the particular work to which he had been trained, and which would be of the greatest use overseas.

Accordingly he joined the Royal Engineers in the capacity of telegraphist and had served three years in France and Flanders, being wounded at the battle of Loos. An old Whalley Grammar School boy, his demise is lamented by his many friends at the local Post Office where his geniality and good fellowship was appreciated by his old colleagues, while his courtesy to the general public singled him out for special favour; at the Golf Club, of which he was a popular member; and at the Parish Church where, for some time, he was a member of the choir. His younger brother, Reg., is at present on leave from the front. We tender to the bereaved mother and family our very sincere sympathy in their great sorrow.
