Walter Turner was the son of John and Alison Turner, née McIntosh. John, who at one time worked as a clog maker, was born at Slaidburn, Yorkshire (the son of Christopher and Jane Turner); Alice was born at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. In 1871 John, Alice and their children were living at Howlsike, Glaisdale, Yorkshire.
1881 Edinburgh, Midlothian Census: 162, Pleasance - Walter Turner, aged 3 years, born Yorkshire. [Walter and two sisters, Annie and Alice, along with their mother Alice, were visiting George (born Edinburgh 1831) and Ann Ewart (born Kent 1834) who were probably relatives The rest of the Turner family were living at 9, Chaloner Street, Guisborough, Yorkshire.]
1891 Armathwaite Township, Cumberland: Firth Inn - Walter Turner, aged 13 years, born, Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire, son of John and Alison Turner.
1911 Eyke, Suffolk Census: Woodbridge - Walter Turner, clog maker, aged 32 years, born Robin Hoods Bay, Yorkshire. [Walter and his brother Joseph, who was born at Slaidburn, Yorkshire, were living with Harry and Ann Collins.]
The British Army Service Record for Walter Turner exists but may be incomplete. In this record it is stated that his mother, Alison, aged 83 years (in 1919), was living at 2, Court Lane, Skipton, Yorkshire. A daughter of Walter, Gladys Grimwood, born 12 August 1913 is also named and her address is given as c/o Mrs. Smith, Church Terrace, Wickham Market, Suffolk.
