John James Tweedale or Twedale was born 31 December 1882.

John was married to Frances Agnes Barrett in 1909. Frances, born Skipton, 19 March 1886, was the daughter of Margaret Ann Barrett who married William Marshall in 1888.

1911 Skipton, Yorkshire Census: 13, Queen Street - John James Tweedale, aged 28 years, born Whitehaven, Cumberland, husband of Frances Agnes Tweedale.

John died in the same action as Wireless Telegraph Operator George Edward Turner (497WTS) (q.v.) and Wireless Telegraph Operator Sidney William Rudderham (494WTS) (q.v.).

John is commemorated on Knottingley War Memorial.

SKIPTON STOKER DROWNED

Amongst those who went down on the ill-fated ‘Hogue’, which was sunk on September 22nd by a German submarine, is Mr. John James Twedale, a former Skiptonian, who was a reservist and a first-class stoker.

Mr. Twedale married a daughter of Mrs. Marshall of Providence Place, Skipton, who now resides at Headlands, Knottingley, and is left with four children, one of them being only three weeks’ old. He was formerly employed in Skipton by Mr. Wm. ----- at the Unicorn Hotel, and subsequently as a carter by Mr. E. Smith. The deceased was a member of the Earl of Thanet Lodge (M.U.) for about ten years, and was well know in the town and district.

TWEEDALE – In loving memory of John James Tweedale, lost in action with H.M.S. Hogue, September 22nd, 1914.

We were not by his side,
To bid him a last farewell;
But deep within our hearts,
His memory shall dwell.

From his loving Wife and Children, Skipton.

TWEEDALE – July 3rd, at 18, Victoria Street, Skipton, Jack Tweedale, aged 4 years.

TWEEDALE – In loving memory of John James Tweedale, of H.M.S. Hogue, which was torpedoed on September 22nd, 1914.
