HOLMES – November 16th, 1916, in the Military Hospital, Rouen, following wounds received in action in France, Pte. Wilfred Ewart Holmes, of Buckden, aged 18 years.

01 December 1916

A BUCKDEN LAD’S SACRIFICE

Private Wilfred Ewart Holmes, who was 18 years of age on May 19th last, and prior to enlistment worked on the farm of Mr. John Tennant, Buckden, passed away in the Military Hospital at Rouen on November 16th. He joined up with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in June last, and was trained at Rugeley Camp, proceeding to the Front with the Northumberland Fusiliers in October. He was with the Durham Light Infantry when he was wounded in the face, chest and right hand in action on November 8th.

The Vicar, the Rev. R. F. R. Anderton, conducted a well-attended memorial service in Hubberholme Church on Sunday, and remarked that Pte. Holmes had the respect and love of all who knew him, and they thanked God for his splendid example of loyal service, while at the same time their prayers would be for those who mourned him most – viz. his parents, who live at Batley, where Mr. Holmes is one of the managers at the mill of Messrs. Holdsworth, Carter, & Co.
