Before the war William was employed at Nappa Hall, Aysgarth, as a cowman. He was reported as ‘missing’ 5.11.16. He died whilst a prisoner of war and was buried in Valenciennes Communal (German) Cemetery Extension. His remains were exhumed and reburied in Valenciennes (St. Roch) Communal Cemetery.
