PADIHAM WEAVER KILLED

Mrs. Brooks, of 6, Villiers-street, Padiham, was officially informed on Saturday of the death in action on July 31st of her son, Pte. Willie Brooks, 40099, Royal Scottish Fusiliers. The deceased soldier was 27 years of age, and was a weaver at Perseverance Mill, and was identified with St. Matthew's Church and School. Previous to enlistment on February 8th, 1916, he was residing at Earby and employed as a warehouseman at Messrs. Nutter's Grove Mill. During his residence at Earby he became a member of the Zion Baptist Church. Pte. Brooks joined at Keighley, enlisting in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, and afterwards was transferred to the Royal Scottish Fusiliers.

The Captain of his company writes:-"Dear Mrs. Brooks, - I deeply regret having to inform you of the death of your son, No. 40099 Pte. W. Brooks. He was killed in action on the morning of the 31st July. For a long time he has been an officer's servant in my company, and as such I knew him very well indeed. He was very well liked by the men in his company. I and all the officers and men alike miss him very much. We can, therefore, sympathise with you very much. The officer whom he attended to was badly wounded, but I have no doubt that you will have a note from him, too, when he hears of your son's death."
