ASKRIGG – DIED FOR HIS COUNTRY

The sad news has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Webster, Nappa Scar, Askrigg, that their youngest son, Gunner Wm. Webster, R.F.A., had died in hospital in France. Gunner Webster, who was only 22 years of age, enlisted in May 1915, and had been in France about seven months. He was slightly wounded on July 7th and on the night of the 29th his billet was heavily shelled with gas shells. He nobly assisted his comrades who suffered more than himself and he was afterwards removed to hospital. Pneumonia supervened, and he died suddenly on the 5th inst.

His was highly spoken of by his commanding officer as a good and brave soldier and well liked by his comrades. He was buried with all military honours. Before he enlisted he was a member of the Askrigg Church choir and was much esteemed by all who knew him.

Much sympathy is felt for the parents and family in their sad bereavement. Mr. and Mrs. Webster have two other sons in the Army. We hope to give a photograph next week.
