AUSTWICK – PTE. WALLBANK DIES OF WOUNDS

We regret to record the death of another soldier, viz. Private William Wallbank, Linolnshire Regiment, fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Wallbank, Chapman Bank, Eldroth. Pte. Wallbank, who was 19 years of age, enlisted on February 15th last, in the Leicester Regiment. He went out to France in May last and was transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment. In August he was wounded in the left hand, and also had trench fever. After being in hospital a few weeks, he again went into the firing line, and was again wounded on November 22nd, so seriously that he died two days later. Pte. Wallbank was very highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him. He was educated at Eldroth school, and prior to enlisting was a farm servant employed by Mr. Hitchin, Holme House, Gargrarve. The heartfelt sympathies of the people of Eldroth and district are extended to Mr. and Mrs. Wallbank in their great loss. A letter dated November 25th, announcing his death, has been received by his mother from the matron of No. 4 Casualty Clearance Station, France.

ELDROTH – MEMORIAL SERVICE

A memorial service was recently held at Eldroth Church in memory of the four youths who have paid the supreme sacrifice. The preacher was the vicar, the Rev. A. S. Sutcliffe, who preached a very touching and impressive service, naming Private Joseph Wood, of Bridge End, Eldroth, who died whilst in training at Salisbury Plain; Private Richard Titterington, of the Canadians, who was killed in action last February, the eldest son of Mr. R Titterington, late of Acrill Hall, and now in Canada, and grandson of Mr. R. Titterington, of Bludsgarth; Private Hector Capstick, killed in action in August last; Private William Wallbank, died of wounds a few weeks ago, the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Wallbank, of Chapman Bank. There was a nice gathering of parishioners in spite of the stormy weather.

WALLBANK – In loving memory of our dear son, Private William Wallbank, who died of wounds in France November 24th, 1917.

Somewhere in France in a soldier’s grave
Lies our dear son amongst the brave;
Sleep on, dear William, so kind and true,
No one on earth was better than you.
For us you always did your best,
May God grant you eternal rest.

From his sorrowing Mother and Father, Sisters and Brothers.

28 November 1919

WALLBANK – In loving memory of Private William Wallbank, who died of wounds November 24th, 1917.

If those who caused this awful war
Were the only ones to fight,
A brighter world this would have been
For aching hearts tonight.

From Father, Mother, Brothers and Sisters.

      Hello,

William Wallbank may be a relative of mine, I understand my family name originated from Yorkshire.
