Benjamin Stringer Greaves (born 4 December 1896) was the son of Wilks and Charlotte Greaves, née Thompson. Wilks was born at Pontefract, Yorkshire, the son of John Holmes and Emma Greaves, née Stringer. Charlotte was born at Gibraltar, c. 1870, the daughter of John Henry and Amelia Phoebe Thompson.

1901 Pontefract, Yorkshire Census: 41, Queen Street - Benjn S. Greaves, aged 4 years, born Carleton, Yorkshire, son of Charlotte Greaves (married). [In 1901, Wilks was living at Wadsley near Sheffield, Yorkshire.]

1911 Pontefract, Yorkshire Census: Tanshelf Drive - Benjamin Greaves, aged 14 years, born ( - ), grandson of John Henry and Amelia Phoebe Thompson. [In 1911, Benjamin's mother was living at the Rose & Crown Hotel, Skipton, and father at Wakefield, Yorkshire.]

On 17 March 1917, H.M.S. 'Paragon' fighting alongside H.M.S. ‘Llewellyn’ in an action in the Dover Strait with eight German torpedo boats, H.M.S. ‘Paragon’ was sunk by torpedo with the loss of all on board.

GREAVES – March 17th-18th, killed in action during a naval engagement, A.B. (Quartermaster) Benjamin Stringer Greaves, son of Mrs. Greaves, of the Rose and Crown Hotel, Skipton, aged 20 years.

SKIPTON SAILOR KILLED IN ACTION

We regret to learn that Mrs. Greaves of the Rose and Crown Hotel, Skipton, received an intimation from the Admiralty on Tuesday that her son, A.B. (Quartermaster) Benjamin Stringer Greaves, was killed in action during an engagement with the enemy on March 17th-18th. Twenty years of age, deceased joined the Royal Navy when 15 years of age, and during the present War had been in several engagements. At the time of his death he was serving on a torpedo destroyer.

Above photograph is that of A. B. (Quartermaster) Benjamin Stringer Greaves, son of Mrs. Greaves, of the Rose and Crown Hotel, Skipton, who, as recorded in our last issue, was killed in action during a naval engagement on March 17th-18th. He was 20 years of age, had been in the Navy since he was 15 years old, and at the time of his death was serving on a torpedo destroyer.

SKIPTON SAILOR KILLED IN ACTION

We regret to announce that Able Seaman (Quartermaster) Benjamin Stringer Greaves, of one of His Majesty’s Torpedo Destroyers, son of Mrs. Greaves of the Rose and Crown Hotel, Skipton, was killed in action during an engagement between March 17th and 18th with the enemy, as officially reported by the Admiralty this week. Able Seaman Greaves, who was 20 years of age, had been in the Navy about five years. Mrs. Greaves received the sad news from the Admiralty on Tuesday morning last. He was well-known in Skipton and highly respected.
