William Henry Grant was the son of Jonathan Robert Knowles and Harriet Grant, née Bird. Jonathan was born at Burnley, Lancashire anf Harriet at Woolpit Green, Suffolk.

1891 Burnley, Lancashire Census: 5, Tunstil Street - William H. Grant, aged 7 years, born Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, son of Harriet Grant (married).

1901 Blackburn, Lancashire Census: 91, Walter Street - William H. Grant, aged 17 years, born Barnoldswick, Yorkshire, nephew of Richard and Hannah Bagley. [William's grandmother, Harriet Bird, was also living there with her daughter and son-in-law.]

William was married to Sarah Alice Dickenson in 1909.

1911 Barnoldswick, Yorkshire Census: 10, Butts - William Henry Grant, aged 28 years, born Barnoldswick, husband of Sarah Alice Grant.

WOUNDED AND MISSING

Private William Henry Grant, East Yorks. Regiment, is a prisoner and has been wounded in the hip. He was captured on April 13th, after being in the trenches thirteen days. His wife lives at 12 Butts, Barnoldswick.

Death of a Barnoldswick Prisoner in Germany

An official intimation reached Mrs. Grant, 12 Butts, Barnoldswick, last weekend of the death of her husband, Private William Henry Grant, West Yorks. Regiment, on the 7th June. He had only been in France a fortnight when captured on April 13th, having been wounded by rifle shot on both sides. In two letters received from him (the last dated May 15th) he wrote quite cheerfully and did not appear to think his wounds of a dangerous character.

According to information received from a German source, Private Grant was buried at Cologne and was given a military funeral. He was formerly a weaver in the employ of Mr. Thos. Nutter, Calf Hall Shed.
