HURST – Killed on the Western Front, August 8th, Rifleman Claude Hurst, King’s Royal Rifles, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Hurst, Water Street, Skipton, aged 19 years.

SKIPTON RIFLEMAN KILLED

After a lapse of a fortnight without serious news of Skipton men at the Front, we have this week to record the death in action of Rifleman Claude Hurst, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hartley Hurst, of Water Street, Skipton (formerly of Church Street). The official news from the War Office was received on Sunday morning, and this indicated that deceased was killed on August 8th. Nineteen years of age, deceased joined the King’s Royal Rifles in November, 1915, and went to the Front about Whitsuntide with a Service Battalion of the Regiment. Prior to joining the Army he was for some time engaged as farm servant at Mr. Collins’ farm, Broughton, and previously worked for Eastman’s, Ltd., butchers, Skipton. He was an old scholar at the Water Street Council School. Another son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hurst, Gunner Sidney Hurst, is serving with the R.F.A.

SKIPTON SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hartley Hurst, now of Water Street, and late of 8 Church Street, Skipton, received official notification from the War Office on Sunday morning last that their son, Rifleman Claude Hurst, of the 18th Service Battalion King’s Royal Rifles, had been killed in action on the 8th of August. Rifleman Hurst, who was only 19 years of age, enlisted at Keighley in November 1915, and went out to France about last Whitsuntide. He was an old scholar at the Water Street Council School, and was formerly employed as a farm servant by Mr. Collinge, of Broughton, and previous to that as a butcher by Messrs. Eastman’s, Sheep Street, Skipton. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst have another son, Gunner Sidney Hurst, who is serving in the Royal Field Artillery.
