Thomas Hurst (true name Thomas Layfield) was the son of Clara Priscilla Layfield (born Darley, Yorkshire, c. 1870), daughter of George and Mary Layfield, née Craven. Thomas was the cousin of Private Sylvester Layfield (34329) (q.v.).

1901 Stonebeck Down, Yorkshire Census: Spring House - Thomas Layfield, aged 2 years, born Spring House, Yorkshire, son of Clara P. Layfield (single). [Clara and her children, Thomas and Margaret Ann, were living with her mother, Mary Layfield.]

1911 Kelbrook, Yorkshire Census: Paris Farm - Thomas Layfield, aged 13 years, born Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, son of Clara Hurst (married). [Clara had married William Hurst in 1905.]

Private Thos. Hurst, D.L.I., of Holly Bank, Tubber Hill, Barnoldswick, is missing since April 12th.

BARNOLDSWICK – MISSING, PRESUMED DEAD

Mr. and Mrs. Hurst, Holly Bank, Tubber Hill, Barnoldswick, have received an official intimation presuming the death of their son, Private Thomas Hurst, D.L.I., previously reported missing on the 12th April, 1918. He joined up at the age of 18, and had served two years.
