Ernest Walter Maurice Garratt was the son of James and Emma Garratt, née Standing. James was born at Brixton Deverill, Wiltshire and Emma at Barnoldswick, Yorkshire. Ernest was the half-brother of Sgt Philip Henry Garratt, who was awarded the D.C.M. in the Great War and cousin of Private Greenwood James Standing (28427) (q.v.).

Ernest was killed in action near Gheluvelt during the Battles of Ypres, 1917, 31 July-10 November, at the Second Battle of Passchendaele, 26 October-10 November.
