Fred Tuley was the son of Francis Edwin and Sarah Ann Tuley, née Pickles. Francis was born at Oakworth and Sarah at Earby, Yorkshire. (Sarah died in 1889).

1891 Earby, Yorkshire Census: Aspen Lane - Fred Tuley, aged 4 years, born Thornton [Thornton-in-Craven Parish], Yorkshire, grandson of Thomas and Martha Pickles.

1901 Earby, Yorkshire Census: 27, Aspen Lane - Fred Tuley, aged 14 years, born Thornton [Thornton-in-Craven Parish], Yorkshire, grandson of Martha A. Pickles, widow.

Fred was married to Annie Spencer in 1906. (Annie died c. 1910).

1911 Earby, Yorkshire Census: 29, Aspen Lane - Fred Tuley, aged 24 years, widower, born Earby. Sarah Ann Tuley, daughter, aged 3 years, born Earby.

BARNOLDSWICK AND EARBY NEWS – Patriotic Brothers

The example of three brothers named Tuley is one to be commended. Though they are all married, they responded to the call by enlisting in Kitchener’s Army, and have for some time been undergoing training. The three are expected home on a short visit this week end.

Pte. Fred Tuley, 1/6th Duke of Wellington’s, has been reported wounded in France on the 17th ult. at a place not stated. His home is at 31, School Lane, Earby.

EARBY – ANOTHER SOLDIER KILLED

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Spencer, 31, Green End Avenue, received official news on Tuesday of the death of their son-in-law, Pte. Fred Tuley, Duke of Wellington’s, who was killed in action in France on May 3rd. Deceased, who was 30 years of age, was a widower with three children, who are left in charge of the grandparents at the above address. He had been in the Army 2½ years, and had spent 15 months in France. During the fighting on the Somme last September, Private Tuley was incapacitated for some time by shell shock, but had never been home since he first left England. Before enlisting he was a weaver at Messrs. R. Nutter and Co., Grove Shed. His two brothers are with the Army in France.
