Greenwood James Standing was the son of Joseph and Esther Standing née Wilkinson. Both parents were born at Barnoldswick, Yorkshire. Greenwood was the cousin of Private Ernest Walter Maurice Garratt (40858) (q.v.).

2nd Bn. Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment)

To Méaulte (17/10), Bernafay Wood in reserve (20/10), support positions (Windmill and Shin Trenches) facing Le Transloy (22/10). Attack on Zenith Trench (23/10) – ‘B’ and ‘D’ Companies moved forward to Spectrum Trench and captured Zenith after 8.15 p.m. (24/10). Relieved and to Bernafay Wood during night (30/10) – later to Mansell Camp.

[Greenwood James Standing was killed in action on the 26 October 1916.]

BARNOLDSWICK MAN MISSING

Private Greenwood J. Standing, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment, son of Mr. J. Standing, Butts Top, and a partner in the firm of Standing Bros., printers and billposters, Barnoldswick, has been officially reported missing since October 26th. He joined the Army in the spring and had been in France two months.

BARNOLDSWICK – MISSING SOLDIER’S DEATH PRESUMED

The Army Council has given notice presuming the death of Pte. Greenwood J. Standing, West Yorkshire Regiment, who has been reported missing in France since October 26th 1916. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Standing, Butts Top, and a partner in the firm of Standing Bros., printers, Barnoldswick. Enlisting in the spring, he received his training at a camp in Northumberland, and went out to France in August of last year. Pte. Standing was 25 years of age.
