Ingleby Stuart Jefferson (born 7 January 1893) was the son of William Dixon and Mary Stuart Jefferson, née Gray. William was born at Northallerton and Mary at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire.

1901 Newton-le-Willows, Yorkshire Census: Aysgarth School - Ingleby S. Jefferson, aged 8 years, born Ripon, Yorkshire.

Ingleby played for the United Services and Headingley R.F.C.

Ingleby is commemorated on the Ripon War Memorial.

The Submarine C34 commanded by I S Jefferson was torpedoed off Fair Isle by U-52, commanded by Oblt Otto Launberg.

JEFFERSON, INGLEBY STUART, Lieut., R.N., elder s. of Dr. William Dixon Jefferson, of North House, Ripon, by his wife, Mary Stuart, dau. of the Rev, Samuel Gray, Vicar of Pateley Bridge and Leconfield; b. Ripon, 7 Jan. 1893; educ. Aysgarth School, co. York, and on H.M.S. Conway, from where he passed out first; then went to Dartmouth for two years; afterwards for six months was a cadet in H.M.S. Cumberland; appointed Midshipman in H.M.S. Shannon 15 May 1910, and promoted Sub-Lieut. 15 Aug. 1913, and Lieut. in 1915; served in H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh and H.M.S. Orion, being given command of H.M. Submarine C 34 in 1917, and was killed in action in the North Sea 21 July 1917. He was a good all-round athlete; was a clever boxer; represented the Navy in the annual match against the Army at Football in March, 1914; was a fine swimmer, and won the Humane Society’s Medal for saving the life of a soldier when in H.M. Submarine C 21; unm.

THE YOUNGEST SUBMARINE COMMANDER – LIEUTENANT I. S. JEFFERSON KILLED

Lieutenant Ingleby Stuart Jefferson, R.N., who was killed in action on July 21st through the torpedoing of H.M. Submarine C34, was the elder son of Dr. Jefferson, medical officer of health for Ripon, and a nephew of Mr. R. I. Jefferson, manager of the Skipton branch of the Bank of Liverpool. Lieutenant Jefferson, who was 24 years of age, was five years at Aysgarth School, and later passed first out of H.M.S. Conway, spending two years at Dartmouth, and then six months as a cadet on H.M.S. Cumberland. He was midshipman on H.M.S. Shannon and H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh at Alexandretta. Whilst sub-lieutenant on H.M.S. Orion he was transferred at the beginning of the war to a torpedo boat, and afterwards to submarines. Whilst in his first submarine he was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s medal for having saved the life of a soldier. He became lieutenant in 1915. He was a good all-round athlete, and played football for the Navy against the Army at Queen’s Club in March 1914. He was very popular in Ripon where great sympathy is expressed with Dr. and Mrs. Jefferson.

Lieut. Jefferson was the youngest submarine commander in the British Navy, and his prospects of advancement were very bright. An official wireless communication from Berlin on July 22nd stated that the torpedoed submarine C34, of which Lieut. Jefferson was the commander, was sunk by an enemy submarine. The only survivor was a stoker who was taken prisoner.
